TIPS

If it is very important for you to take a train and you could not buy a regular ticket, don’t worry, you still have options. There are different quotas available in Indian Railways and you can check seats in them. Let us explain about different quotas in Indian Railway-

1.Tickets in Tatkal Quota can be booked both offline and online. They are the last minute option provided to travellers by IRCTC, which are sold five days before to the train is scheduled to depart. Sometimes when there is a lot of rush, tatkal tickets become the last resort of the travellers. But, it comes with a price. You have to stand in line to buy the ticket and it will be really expensive since you will have to pay for the entire journey, even if you want to travel for just a part of it. All you can control is the boarding station. You can buy these tickets online but they are available only at 12:00 am (IST)      to give those customers a chance who are buying on the train station.

2. Next is Ladies Quota. There are 6 berths in every coach reserved for ladies. If you are a lady travelling alone, ladies quota is your best bet. You will get a seat if you try to reserve it on this quota (subjected to availability), but you can expect men’s berths all around it.

3. Then comes the Foreign Tourist Quota. You can buy these tickets only at the tourist ticket reservation window on train stations. These are not available online. You can go to the tourist agencies who can book tickets in this quota, but they will charge you a hefty amount. When this article was written, it is not possible to book tickets in this quota online. However, that can change in future, depending on decisions of IRCTC.
